Aerating your lawn is important to maintaining the health and beauty of your grass and their roots, but there are steps that you can take before and after aeration and overseeding to get the maximum benefit from these services.
1) Prior to aeration and overseeding, lower your mower deck one notch below your normal mowing height the cut you do before aeration. This will help ensure that water and nutrients are reaching the soil as efficiently as possible.
2) Avoid any temptation to rake up or move the soil plugs generated by the aeration process. We know, it looks like you were visited by a flock of geese, but the ability for these plugs to resettle into the lawn is part of this important process and will usually be dissolved in a few days.
3) Consider applying a starting fertilizer especially if you have a number of bare patches in the lawn. This can either be done at the same time as overseeding or a couple weeks after. Its usually ideal to apply a natural fertilizer 2-3 weeks after overseeding to really maximize the growth of the new grass.
4) Water, Water, Water. After applying new seed, water your grass twice daily for 15 minutes at a time. This allows for the seed to get the necessary water for germination but in quantities that won't flood out or move the seed. In the second week, water once daily for a longer period (30-45 minutes each time). In the third week water every other day for 45 minutes at a time.
5) We recommend that you avoid using any herbicides for 3-4 weeks after you have overseeded your lawn due to the potential negative impact they can have on new grass growth. Let your grass thrive and push out the ability for weeds to take hold.
That's it! Follow these steps and you are well on your way to a lush and vibrate green lawn!
